Course Plan at a Glance

Every week you’ll unlock the next topic in the sequence shown below. You can watch each video as many times as you like until the second exam window closes.

Week 1: Assessment of the Trauma Patient

Trauma cases can feel overwhelming, but a clear, step-by-step approach makes all the difference. In this module, you’ll learn how to assess and stabilise injured patients quickly and confidently.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Triage effectively, both over the phone and when the patient arrives
  • Use a structured ABCD primary survey to spot and treat the most urgent problems first
More about this module

  • Using bedside ultrasound (AFAST/TFAST) and basic blood tests to get critical answers fast
  • Recognising shock and life-threatening bleeding and knowing when to reach for blood products
  • Providing pain relief safely, even in unstable patients

Real-world case examples will demonstrate precisely how to apply these skills in practice. By the end, you'll have a clear plan for approaching any trauma patient, so you can act decisively when every minute counts.

Week 2: Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury can look very different from patient to patient, and early decisions have a significant impact on recovery. In this module, you’ll learn how to spot, assess, and treat TBI confidently.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognise TBI when it’s not obvious and when to suspect it based on trauma history
  • Approach to the neurological exam step-by-step, including how to use the modified Glasgow Coma Scale
More about this module

  • The difference between primary and secondary brain injury and why early intervention matters
  • Managing intracranial pressure with hyperosmolar therapy (mannitol or hypertonic saline)
  • When to use imaging and how to interpret findings
  • Safe stabilisation: oxygen, fluid therapy, seizure control, and careful analgesia

You'll also see real-life cases illustrating how treatment decisions can alter the course of recovery. By the end, you'll have a clear plan to approach any suspected TBI from first contact through the critical first hours.

Week 3: Respiratory Trauma

Respiratory trauma can deteriorate rapidly, making early recognition and decisive action critical. This module teaches you how to assess, stabilise, and treat breathing emergencies with confidence.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Spot and differentiate common injuries: pneumothorax, lung contusions, diaphragmatic hernia, rib fractures, and airway tears
  • Use oxygen therapy effectively, including when to escalate to high-flow oxygen or intubation
More about this module

  • Perform thoracocentesis and place chest drains step by step, with practical tips to stay calm under pressure
  • Manage pain safely without compromising breathing
  • Recognise “look-alike” conditions that cause tachypnea but aren’t true respiratory emergencies

Real case examples will show how small decisions, like early drainage or choosing the right analgesia, can be lifesaving. By the end of this module, you’ll be prepared to quickly assess any dyspneic trauma patient and take action to protect their airway and improve oxygenation.

Week 4: Abdominal Trauma

Respiratory trauma can deteriorate rapidly, making early recognition and decisive action critical. This module teaches you how to assess, stabilise, and treat breathing emergencies with confidence.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Differentiate blunt from penetrating trauma and understand their common injury patterns
  • Use AFAST, radiographs, and contrast studies to diagnose hemoabdomen, uroabdomen, diaphragmatic hernia, and GI perforation
More about this module

  • Recognise when free fluid is blood, urine, bile, or septic exudate—and why it matters for treatment
  • Stabilise patients with hemorrhage or electrolyte derangements, including transfusions and managing severe hyperkalemia
  • Plan for surgical intervention when indicated, and communicate realistic expectations with owners

Real-life cases illustrate how quick recognition and early stabilisation can improve survival, even in severe trauma. By the end, you’ll feel prepared to approach any abdominal trauma patient with a clear plan, from triage through surgery and recovery.

Week 5: Complications in Polytrauma

Polytrauma patients often look stable until they’re not. This module will help you anticipate complications and respond effectively when things change fast.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognise patterns of injury in road traffic accidents, falls, and severe bite wounds
  • Understand the “second hit” effect—how inflammation, coagulopathy, and reperfusion injury can spiral into organ failure
More about this module

  • Approaching decision-making around surgery timing and damage control stabilisation
  • Managing acute respiratory distress syndrome, trauma-induced coagulopathy, and sepsis
  • Choosing fluids, analgesia, and transfusions wisely to support recovery without adding risk

Real-life cases will demonstrate how delayed problems, such as bile peritonitis or ARDS, can emerge days later and how early planning can improve outcomes. By the end, you’ll feel more prepared to lead the care of complex trauma patients, anticipate pitfalls, and support their recovery step by step.

Week 6: Examination

Complete the exam at any time after finishing the modules. You’ll have two attempts (each two hours). Pass with a score of 70% or more to receive your personalised certificate signed by Dr. Franziska Meyer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Email us at hello@thevettribe.com
We're here to help!

Are the lessons live?

No, after five years of running online courses we know veterinarians and vet students prefer to study when it suits them. All teaching is delivered as pre-recorded videos (5-20 min each) grouped into weekly modules (about 2h of content per module). This format also avoids time-zone clashes and 5 a.m. alarms.

Do I get all modules at once?

No. The course is designed to release modules gradually so you have time to absorb each topic before moving on. As soon as you enroll, Module 1 unlocks right away, and then a new module becomes available every 7 days from your enrollment date (regardless of which day of the week you sign up).

You'll have access to all content for 12 weeks in total from the day you enroll, so you can revisit videos and resources as often as you like.

Will I have contact with the mentor?

Yes. You’ll be part of The Vet Tribe Community - available on our website or through the app. That’s where you can ask questions and get answers from mentors and the wider community. Whether you’re stuck on a case, curious about a detail, or just want to share your progress, you won’t be learning alone. Read, post, connect, and keep growing - together.

Will I get a certificate after completing the course?

Yes! To earn your certificate, you’ll need to pass the online exam with a score of 70% or higher. Your personalised certificate will be issued once you’ve met that requirement. This ensures that only students who have genuinely engaged with and understood the material receive certification.

How long do I keep access to course materials?

You'll have full access to the course for 12 weeks from the day you sign up. Learn at your own pace, revisit modules, and stay connected the whole way through.

How long can I watch the videos?

This is a 5-week course with one module unlocked each week to keep you focused. You'll have full access to all content and replays for 12 weeks from the moment you enroll.

The videos sound quiet – what can I do?

Some browsers default to 30% volume. Click the speaker icon in the lower-left of the player and raise the level. If that fails, clear your browser cookies, check your device's audio settings or try another device/headphones.

Can I log in from multiple devices?

Your purchase is for one person. The system flags simultaneous log-ins; misuse may lead to your account being suspended.

Can I download all the materials?

All PDFs, workbooks and documents can be saved locally. Videos cannot be downloaded - this protects the content from piracy.

Should I print the workbook?

Highly recommended. Many vets find it easier to write notes by hand, but you can just as easily use the PDF alongside your own digital or paper notebook.

Is the exam live?

The exam is hosted on our online platform. Once it unlocks, you can start it anytime and complete it at your own pace. You'll need a score of 70% or higher to pass and receive your certificate.

Do I get complimentary access to The Vet Tribe Community?

Yes. When you join the course, you get free access to The Vet Tribe Community for 6 months. It’s your space to ask questions, connect with mentors and other vets, share your wins, and keep learning together. After 6 months, you can choose to continue or leave - no pressure, cancel anytime.

What if it's not the right fit?

We've got you. If you decide the course isn't for you, just email us during the first week after enrolling - before Module 2 unlocks - and we'll give you a 100% refund, no questions asked.

Can I split my payment?

Split your payment at no extra cost! Get started today by paying just half the course fee. The second half is automatically charged in one month. No interest, no hidden fees - just an easy way to make the course more accessible.
