- Types of shock: hypovolaemic, distributive, cardiogenic, obstructive
- Clinical signs and subtle indicators
- Prioritising patient needs and managing client communication

By the end of this module you will be able to confidently identify the different types of shock, understand their pathophysiology and know exactly how to start treating them fast. Lesson 3: Patient #2
Explore cardiogenic shock step by step. This sub-module highlights how heart failure can lead to poor perfusion and why these patients need a different treatment approach.

Lesson 4: Patient #3
Review obstructive shock in this clear, case-based discussion. Learn how conditions like GDV or pericardial effusion block circulation and what to do first.

Lesson 5: Patient #4
Practice sorting stable from unstable patients. This case reinforces the importance of trends, reassessment, and staying alert to subtle changes.

Lesson 6: Stages of Shock
Understand the progression from early compensation to decompensation and irreversible damage. Recognise what stage your patient is in so you can respond effectively.

Lesson 7: Clinical Signs
Get confident identifying the outward signs of shock. From mucous membrane colour to pulse quality, this sub-module teaches you exactly what to look for.

Lesson 8: Client Communication
Learn how to explain shock to worried owners clearly and compassionately. You will pick up tips for discussing prognosis, costs, and urgency in a way that builds trust.

Lesson 9: Prognosis
Explore what factors influence survival and recovery. This section helps you set realistic expectations and make informed recommendations.

Lesson 10: Most Common Questions
Get answers to the questions vets hear most often about shock. Quick, practical guidance to help you feel prepared in any conversation.

Week 3: Point-of-Care Diagnostics and Stabilisation

Use What You Have. Stabilise What You Can.

- How to use PCV/TS, glucose, lactate, blood smear and acid-base analysis
- POCUS: when and how to use it
- Initial oxygen therapy, pain control and triage-based decision making
- Early stabilisation tips for the unstable patient

You will learn how to use the tools you already have like PCV/ TP, lactate, blood smear and POCUS to get rapid meaningful answers. By the end of this module you will know how to stabilise patients even before full workups are available.

Learn how to quickly gather the most important data when minutes count. This sub-module introduces the essential tools and techniques for bedside testing in emergency cases.

Lesson 2: NOVA / ISTAT Evaluation
Understand how to interpret NOVA and ISTAT results confidently. You will cover acid-base balance, electrolytes, and critical parameters that guide immediate treatment decisions.

Lesson 3: Sodium
Explore how to detect and manage sodium imbalances in emergency patients. This section explains the causes, risks, and correction strategies step by step.

Lesson 4: Potassium
Get clear on why potassium levels matter in critical care. Learn how to recognise hyperkalaemia and hypokalaemia and act quickly to protect your patient’s heart.

Lesson 5: Calcium
Review the role of calcium in stabilising your patients. This sub-module shows you how to spot abnormalities, interpret their impact, and plan appropriate interventions.

Lesson 6: Magnesium
Understand the importance of magnesium in emergencies. Learn when to test, how to supplement, and why this overlooked electrolyte can make a big difference.

Lesson 7: POCUS – Point of Care Ultrasound

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Email us at [email protected]
We're here to help!

Are the lessons live?

No, after five years of running online courses we know veterinarians and vet students prefer to study when it suits them. All teaching is delivered as pre-recorded videos (5-20 min each) grouped into weekly modules (about 2h of content per module). This format also avoids time-zone clashes and 5 a.m. alarms.

Do I get all modules at once?

No. The course is designed to release modules gradually so you have time to absorb each topic before moving on. As soon as you enroll, Module 1 unlocks right away, and then a new module becomes available every 7 days from your enrollment date (regardless of which day of the week you sign up).

You'll have access to all content for 12 weeks in total from the day you enroll, so you can revisit videos and resources as often as you like.

Will I have contact with the mentor?

Yes. You'll be part of The Vet Tribe Community - available on our website or through the app. That's where you can ask questions and get answers from Dr. Kristi or the wider community. Whether you're stuck on a case, curious about a detail, or just want to share your progress, you won't be learning alone. Read, post, connect and keep growing - together.

Will I get a certificate after completing the course?

Yes! To earn your certificate, you'll need to pass the online exam with a score of 70% or higher. Your personalised certificate - signed by Dr Kristi - will be issued once you've met that requirement. We do this to ensure that only students who have genuinely engaged with and understood the material receive certification.

How long do I keep access to course materials?

You'll have full access to the course for 12 weeks from the day you sign up. Learn at your own pace, revisit modules, and stay connected the whole way through.

How long can I watch the videos?

This is a 6-week course with one module unlocked each week to keep you focused. You'll have full access to all content and replays for 12 weeks from the moment you enroll.

The videos sound quiet – what can I do?

Some browsers default to 30% volume. Click the speaker icon in the lower-left of the player and raise the level. If that fails, clear your browser cookies, check your device's audio settings or try another device/headphones.

Can I log in from multiple devices?

Your purchase is for one person. The system flags simultaneous log-ins; misuse may lead to your account being suspended.

Can I download all the materials?

All PDFs, workbooks and documents can be saved locally. Videos cannot be downloaded - this protects the content from piracy.

Should I print the workbook?

Highly recommended. Many vets find it easier to write notes by hand, but you can just as easily use the PDF alongside your own digital or paper notebook.

Is the exam live?

The exam is hosted on our online platform. Once it unlocks, you can start it anytime and complete it at your own pace. You'll need a score of 70% or higher to pass and receive your certificate.

Do I get complimentary access to The Vet Tribe Community?

Yes. When you join the course, you get free access to The Vet Tribe Community for 6 months. It's your space to ask questions, connect with Dr. Kristi and other vets, share your wins, and keep learning together. After 6 months, you can choose to continue or leave - no pressure, cancel anytime.

What if it's not the right fit?

We've got you. If you decide the course isn't for you, just email us during the first week after enrolling - before Module 2 unlocks - and we'll give you a 100% refund, no questions asked.

Can I split my payment?

Split your payment at no extra cost! Get started today by paying just half the course fee. The second half is automatically charged in one month. No interest, no hidden fees - just an easy way to make the course more accessible.
